Supermarkets and big-box stores (more or less the equivalent of Lowe’s or Kmart) exist in Italy, especially near the bigger city centers. But in the small towns that we like to visit (and in which we live!), the individual shops - often family-operated - are often the most convenient. They’re also where you can get the best service - the folks working there are invested in and take pride in offering good products and helpful assistance when needed.

Right now we are working on a Little Roads honeymoon trip for a young couple. Here are a few pictures from some of the places we are sending them: A small Tuscan hill-town whose owner studied pastry in Paris and makes the best croissants; a boutique hotel attached to a Michelin starred restaurant; a small family-run B&B in Chianti; a Slow-Food restaurant with rooms in a small hill town near Modena; a B&B in the Val d’Orcia with four-poster beds and a grand piano; and a hotel with a rooftop pool in a small town just 45 minutes from Rome’s airport. Travel in Italy can be more affordable than you think - and still magical and romantic!
