Below you can find some sample pages of one of our small-town Italy itineraries.
(Ireland and Scotland clients receive their itineraries in a similar layout.)
We deliver our itineraries to our travelers in a “Google doc” format, so they can easily check in on their device from the road. They can also send us questions through the doc, so we can help them out on their way.
What makes a Little Roads Itinerary different from other planning services?
We have personally visited every location that we recommend – every scenic overlook, every eatery, lodging, artisan shop, cheese farm, winery, and tiny city street – so you know that our information is based on first-hand experience.
For many restaurants, we suggest specific dishes or ingredients – we’ve already sourced out the best of the best.
We make all restaurant reservations where needed - just show up and give your name, and your table it there waiting for you. (We also help you book special visits like cheese tastings and winery tours.)
All the photos in our documents are pictures that we took ourselves - so you can get those exact same views!
We receive no kickbacks or percentages from any of the places that we send our travelers – so you can truly trust our recommendations.
We don’t advertise - nearly all of our travelers are repeat clients, or they come to us by word-of-mouth.
Since we live in Italy, we are able to regularly revisit our preferred places, to make sure they’re still excellent.
We’re also always exploring, and discovering new wonderful places! So our unique itineraries always develop from one year to the next.
Sample Italy Itinerary
A typical itinerary document for a week-long trip is something like 50-60 pages. This is a sample of 5 pages extracted from the itinerary of one of our travelers for their upcoming trip to Italy. It outlines a one-day outing from their countryside lodging.

Drive to Vignola (20 minutes).
Vignola is home to a spectacular castle and a very famous bakery. Pasticceria Gollini is a historic bakery (right by the castle) that is well known for its unique chocolate and peanut cake, “Torta Barozzi”. It is a dense chocolate cake with peanuts. The cakes are quite small and are sold in little discs that you can easily bring home.

Vignola is an incredible castle that costs €10/pp to visit. Vignola town will have just celebrated their cherry festival the previous weekend, and you will see those AMAZING cherries (called “Duroni”) sold at roadside stands everywhere. Eat as many of those as you can!
Drive to Castelvetro di Modena (10 minutes). There is a free parking lot at the top of the hill just before you enter the town. Castelvetro is a sweet little hill town with a beautiful clock tower and a few nice restaurants and bars.
Lunch at Ristorante Il Cappero alle Mura. A mix of traditional and modern, with a great wine list.

After lunch, if you are looking for a little local sightseeing, we have two suggestions. You can add these if you like, or skip them and just go back to your agriturismo to swim and relax before dinner at their farm restaurant.
The first suggestion is Bazzano, a hill town with a beautiful castle, the Rocca di Bentivoglio. (30 minutes drive east). The Rocca is open from 15:00-19:00 and holds a small museum of local history and archaeology, with rotating exhibits by modern artists as well. €4/pp entry. In our opinion, this Rocca is worth visiting even without the museum, just to see its beautiful clock tower and ramparts.

If you could use a little pick-me-up while in Bazzano, stop by Area Gusto 1987, a great little bakery and bar.

Parking note: you can walk from the bakery to the Rocca, but it is all uphill. If you don’t want the hike, park near the bakery for your espresso, then park near the Rocca (there is parking by the cemetery), for an easier walk to the Rocca.
Our second sightseeing suggestion is the Abbazia di Monteveglio. This remote hilltop Abbey is an old walled village, and its church is adorned with beautiful frescoes. You can park just outside the Abbey gate, and walk into the complex. Beautiful grounds, and a little cooler as well since it is up on a hill.
Fratelli di San Francesco - Monteveglio
Return to your rural agriturismo and enjoy a dip in the pool before dinner at their fabulous restaurant.
Buon appetito!
